7-OH itself clears fast, with a median half-life of about 4.7 hours after a single oral dose of kratom leaf and about 24.7 hours once someone has been dosing daily, while mitragynine, the alkaloid it is made from, runs roughly 43 hours after one dose and about 68 hours after repeated ones. That gap is the whole answer: the compound people ask about is gone in a day or two, and the one that keeps a test positive can still be there most of a week later.
All four figures come from Huestis and colleagues, published in Molecules in 2024, the only human pharmacokinetic work to measure both alkaloids across single and repeated daily dosing.
What those numbers do and do not tell you
A clearance time answers one question and not the one most people are asking. A standard workplace panel does not screen for kratom alkaloids at all, so a routine negative says nothing either way, and the kratom assays that do exist track mitragynine rather than 7-OH. The figures above also come from dried kratom leaf powder. No human study has measured the concentrated 7-OH tablets, shots and gummies now sold in smoke shops and gas stations, which is the form most people asking this have actually been taking.
Four things the research actually shows
Each of these is sourced in the body below.
- 7-OH clears in hours, mitragynine in days. Median half-lives of roughly 4.7 and 43 hours after a single dose, in the same study, on the same people.
- Daily use stretches both numbers. 7-OH rises to about 24.7 hours and mitragynine to about 68 hours with repeated dosing, because the body is taking on more than it clears each day.
- A half-life is not the time until it is gone. It takes four to five half-lives for a compound to fall below what most assays report, so 4.7 hours is not a four-hour clearance.
- Clearance time does not predict how bad withdrawal will be. A longer half-life spreads symptoms out. It does not make them milder or more severe.
How long 7-OH stays in your body
Half-life is the time it takes for the amount of a substance in the blood to fall by half. It is not the time until the substance is gone. That distinction does most of the work here. A rough working rule in pharmacology is that it takes four to five half-lives for a compound to drop to a level most assays stop reporting, so a 4.7 hour half-life does not mean 7-OH is out of the system in 4.7 hours.
After a single use
In the Huestis study, participants who took one oral dose of encapsulated dried kratom leaf showed a median 7-OH half-life of about 4.7 hours. Run that out four to five times over and the compound is effectively cleared inside the first day. Mitragynine behaved differently. In the same participants, after the same single dose, it showed a mean half-life of about 43.4 hours, which puts effective clearance closer to a week.
That is the part people are surprised by. The alkaloid nobody asks about outlasts the one everybody asks about by roughly nine to one.
After daily use
Repeated dosing changes both numbers, and it changes them in the same direction. Across multiple daily doses, the Huestis figures rise to a mean 7-OH half-life of about 24.7 hours and a mean mitragynine half-life of about 67.9 hours. The mechanism is accumulation. When the next dose arrives before the last one has cleared, the baseline climbs, and the body is working down from a higher starting point every day.

Why mitragynine is the number that matters
7-hydroxymitragynine barely exists in the plant. Most of what ends up in a person's bloodstream after taking kratom leaf is produced in the body, as a metabolite of mitragynine. NIDA describes both alkaloids as acting at the mu-opioid receptor, which is where the opioid-type effects and the opioid-type withdrawal both come from.
That relationship decides the practical answer here, in two ways. The first is supply. As long as mitragynine is still present and still being converted, 7-OH is still being produced, so the short half-life is measured against a source that has not stopped. Second, and more usefully, laboratories that test for kratom at all test for mitragynine rather than 7-OH. ARUP Laboratories, for instance, lists its kratom assay as a mitragynine test. The detection window therefore tracks the parent alkaloid, the slow one, not the metabolite in the search query.
What changes the timeline
Published half-lives are medians and means drawn from a small group of research participants under controlled conditions. Real clearance varies. It varies for reasons that are reasonably predictable.
How often and how long he has been using
This is the largest single factor. The Huestis single-dose against multiple-dose comparison is the evidence for it. Use it once and the four-hour figure applies. Someone who has been dosing several times a day for months is working from the twenty-four-hour figure or longer, with a higher accumulated load behind it.
What the product actually was
Leaf powder and a concentrated tablet are not the same input. The published pharmacokinetics describe only the first. Product labelling in this category is inconsistent, so two packages described the same way on the shelf can behave very differently in a person.
His body, and anything else he is taking
Both alkaloids are processed in the liver. Liver function, age, hydration and body composition all move clearance at the margins. Other substances matter more. Several common medications compete for the same liver enzymes and can slow the rate at which mitragynine is cleared.
Does 7-OH show up on a drug test?
For most tests a person will actually encounter, no. That is a statement about what the test looks for, not about whether anything is present.
Standard panels do not look for it
SAMHSA's Mandatory Guidelines for Federal Workplace Drug Testing Programs define the analytes a regulated urine or oral fluid panel screens for. Kratom alkaloids are not among them. A five-panel or ten-panel test screens a specified list. A substance that is not on the list returns nothing, however recently it was taken. The same holds for most pre-employment and probation panels, which are built from the federal list.
This is the most common misunderstanding about 7-OH. It runs in both directions. A negative result is not evidence that someone has stopped, and a person who has been using 7-OH is not protected by a clean panel from the consequences of continued use.
Kratom-specific panels exist and are ordered deliberately
Testing for kratom is available. It is ordered as its own assay, and ARUP Laboratories publishes one that targets mitragynine by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, separate from any standard panel. Somebody has to decide to order it: a treatment program, a physician, a family court, or an employer with a specific reason. It does not run by default, and it reports on the alkaloid with the longer window.
What the research does not cover
Every figure on this page comes from one study of encapsulated dried kratom leaf powder. That is the boundary of what is known. It is worth being plain about, because the products driving most of the current concern are not what was measured.
Concentrated tablets, shots and gummies deliver the metabolite directly, rather than relying on the body to make it from mitragynine. Nobody has measured what that does. Whether the half-life holds, and what the mitragynine window looks like when comparatively little mitragynine was consumed in the first place, has not been measured in people. The regulatory position reflects how recently this shifted: the DEA moved in July 2026 to place 7-hydroxymitragynine above a specified threshold temporarily in Schedule I, which is also part of why routine testing has not caught up with the products on the shelf.
Is "how long until it is undetectable" the right question?
Sometimes it is exactly right. A scheduled assay is one of those situations. For most people typing it into a search bar at two in the morning, though, it is standing in for a different question, which is usually some version of how long this is going to feel like it does right now.
Those are not the same timeline. They do not run in parallel either. Clearance is a pharmacokinetic measurement. What a person feels while it happens is withdrawal, which starts as the alkaloids fall away and continues well past the point where a laboratory would stop finding anything. Someone counting down to an undetectable result can hit that mark and still feel terrible, and conclude from it that something has gone wrong, when the two processes were simply never on the same clock.
Common myths about how long 7-OH lasts
Myth: 7-OH and kratom clear on the same schedule
They do not. The difference is large. In the Huestis data, mitragynine ran roughly nine times the 7-OH half-life after a single dose. Treating a kratom clearance estimate as a 7-OH estimate, or the reverse, will be wrong by days.
Myth: once it is out of your system, withdrawal is over
Clearance and symptom resolution are different events. Physical symptoms commonly outlast measurable levels. Low mood, broken sleep and cravings can continue for weeks after that. How the two timelines relate is set out in how kratom and 7-OH withdrawal differ.
Myth: a normal drug test would have caught it
A standard panel does not screen for kratom alkaloids at all. Families sometimes take a clean result as settling the question. It settles nothing. The test was never looking.
When is it worth talking to someone?
If the reason for looking up a clearance time is a scheduled test, the answer above is the answer. If the reason is that stopping has been attempted and has not held, the timeline is not the useful information. A different question is.
Signs the use has stopped being casual
The pattern worth watching is not the amount. It is what happens around it: dosing on a schedule to stay ahead of feeling unwell rather than to feel anything; two or three attempts to stop that ended on the same day each time; hiding the purchases; a day that is organised around not running out. Any one of those describes physical dependence, and the clearance figures on this page do not change what is needed next.
